The new British Standard for the fire safety of home battery storage installations, which came into force on the 31st March 2024, will have significant impact on how and where new home batteries are installed.
PAS 63100:2024: Electrical installations. Protection against fire of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for use in dwellings.
To help installers manage the fire related hazards associated with BESS, PAS 63100:2024 covers requirements for fire-safe installations. The provisions are intended to reduce the risk of batteries in dwellings becoming a source of ignition and limit the impact of a battery fire should one occur.
It is available free of charge from BSI: HERE
Part of the new standard is the introduction of additional notices (warning labels) clearly indicating the presence of either BESS or both solar PV and BESS in a building.
Suitable high quality, durable labels are now available from Wind & Sun.
Battery in installation - Solar PV on roof label
Used in systems incorporating energy storage systems (including batteries and inverter/chargers) with grid connected solar photovoltaic systems in a building. This should be fixed:
a) at the origin of the electrical installation;
b) at the metering position, if remote from the origin; and
c) at the consumer unit or distribution board to which the AC supply from the inverter is connected.
